You probably can't really call Stewart Island 'Stewie Islie', but I love it so much, I just really want to symbolise it with a more loving nickname.
PB and DH are not going for it, though, so I guess I might need to let it go.
Our last full day on the island dawned a beauty.
We were awoken to a female kiwi call and leapt out of bed to spot TWO kiwi racing around the front lawn! We thought that was it, but they went out to the back lawn to dig around for worms for quite a while. Magical! That was on DH's bucket list, so feel very privileged to have seen them like that.
As the sun came up , we grabbed the day pack and headed off in search of adventure. We visited the Motaura Moana native gardens then did the fuchsia walk in town. The former was awesome (though a local we talked to said it used to be way better when there were introduced trees and plants growing there.) The latter... meh.
We drove up to a lookout to eat our morning tea and watched the cloud swallow an island.
Then we drove the car towards Acker Point and started to walk out to the stone house, and the mist just blew in up the harbour and swallowed us up!
It hung around in the bay all day. At 3pm I was in sunshine near the pub and the mist was sitting just out at the end of the wharf where the ferry comes in.
Our bach was sunny and the beach was too, but you couldn't see the jetty where the boys had fished yesterday. A bit eerie, but cool.
It was St Patrick's day, so we went to the pub for dinner and a beer (should have been a Guinness!)
It was packed and had a really fun vibe. Nice night out. We bought a meat raffle ticket, though what we would have done with it, given the size of our teensie little caravan freezer, I do not know, but luckily (?) we didn't win.
Our very final day on the island was spent milling about town waiting for our ferry departure at 3.30pm.
We went to the local theater to watch a 40 minute movie called 'A Blokes Tale' all about Stewie Islie. (Go on, it has a certain friendly ring to it...)
We went to the museum.
We went to the clothes shop.
We went to the playground.
We went to the beach.
When we were at the beach a lady walked by and asked us if we were going to look for crabs under the rocks there, because we should able to see some, according to her. So we did! The boys got stuck in and found lots of little crabs and had a lot of fun!
Eventually we went to the ferry terminal and sat upstairs for a while until the boys spotted a kid catching a barracuda off the wharf, so they were off!
Pretty good crossing back to Bluff and back home to the caravan in Invercargill.
What a wonderful treat Stewie, you were. X
