From Fox, we headed out to Lake Matheson and trekked the 1.5 hour track around it. Beautiful views, lovely mossy forest, dark waters and lots of birdlife, it was a great place for lunch.
It's meant to be a spot for a remarkable reflected view of Mount Cook, but conditions weren't quite right for us.
From there, DH suggested we head to the actual glacier, so we drove as far as we could towards it, then took the 1 hour track up from the carpark to view it.
Daredevil DH veered off the track to fetch some ice for PB to experience. Not entirely in keeping with the explicit signage suggesting the perils of such 'veerage', but he didn't meet an untimely doom, so all is well.
PB carried his piece of ice all the way to the lookout and most of the way back down. We thought about beer and hot chips at the end of all the adventures, but a small, exhausted person was sound asleep by the time we got partway home, so it was abandoned.
Instead, our wee friends from previous campsites arrived, PB got his second wind and the kids had a ball riding bikes around in the rain and catching rainwater off the awning. Fun times, even in the rain.
