When we were back at the campground, PB made friends with some little Australian girls and they played for ages in the rain on the campground playground.
The next day, we packed up and made for Westport. On the way, we called at Punakaiki to see the pancake rocks. It was so busy, we had to go down the road to drop off the caravan and drive back in order to just get a park. But the rocks were cool and the walk was neat, so it was worth it.
We got to Westport and found the association campsite at North Beach. It was a great site, right on the beach but still handy to town. The wekas liked it too, we counted about five cheeky wekas and one of them even climbed into our caravan!
I bought some flowers and went to the cemetary to find family graves to pay my respects and the boys made a cool teepee on the beach.
In the morning, we headed to Cape Foulwind and to Tauranga Bay to look at the seals playing. Then we called in at Carters Beach.
We packed up again and hauled the caravan over the hill to Karamea! A big climb, quite narrow, windy roads, but a stunning coast.
Camped in a campsite in Karamea, and who should arrive? But PB's little friends! They made him cupcakes as a belated birthday treat, lit a candle and sang happy birthday - he was totally delighted.
