We headed back to Westport before PB and I had a caravan-free adventure going up, up, up the road to Denniston.
Denniston was an old coal mining town at the top of a huge hill. The only way in and out was via the Denniston Incline, the rail system designed to get the coal down the hill using counter balance.
People would also ride in these coal carts but it was treacherous to do so.
We had a good look around, there were lots of old photos and stories available to look at, as well as the ruins, so it was a very interesting afternoon.
The next day we took a quick walk on North Beach and had morning tea by the Buller River before saying goodbye to wonderful Westport. We had amazing weather while we have been here, it's been just grand.
Through the Buller Gorge (stunning) and out the other side to Murchison. A much better day, so I won't call it 'Murky old Murchison' this time!
DH and PB went to Lake Rotoroa, while I enjoyed a blissful 2 hours to myself. (Unbelievably important when living in a small space with two other humans! )
The boys spotted a sunken dinghy and a big eel and had a great time.
As the sun was stretching into the last corner of the campsite, we got the camp chairs out and were serenaded by some country singers having a practice in the hall next door. Lovely!
